What is a good deal for a used car? This is a follow-up of my original post, where I had reported the tire going completely flat in a few hours and then held the pressure for more than a day later. I brought it to Town Fair Tire for an inspection. They took the tire off the wheel, smooth the rim and remounted it. I was told that there was a bit of corrosion and roughness on the rim. This makes sense to me as the leak may vary depending on whether the rough spot is close to the ground when the car is parked. I changed the o-ring on the distributor shaft. The dist cap gasket does need replacing, but not critical at this point...I want the oil to stop getting inside the distributor. There's a difference between an o-ring and a gasket. Vacuum in hard to reach places if you get yourself a length of hose pipe. Your hose pipe is probably long enough that you can spare 20", all you need to do is place one end of the hose between thumb and fore-finger and cup your hand over the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner. This narrow extension not only enables you to get into those hard to reach areas down the side of the centre console, but it actually has more suck. Use baby wipes on car dashboards, they clean like new and leave an anti-static layer. Time to call the TIRE RACK at 1-800 428 8355(go ahead and google them -they have a great web site. I ordered a nice set of 16 x 7 Rims with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)to go with a set of 235/60HR16 Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus tires.....these tires are FANTASTIC. They grip a wet road like no other and are standard on BMW 5-series cars. Their load rating is a 98H which exceeds the axle requirements for the Ody, so you are legal. I got 5 tires/rims because we Touring folks have no spare and I wanted a full size. If the car is being bid on only by used car dealers, the chances are good that you will be able to snap up the vehicle at a price at (or very close to) the wholesale price. Car dealers of course want to be able to on sell there purchases at a fair price so they too will only bid up to what they consider a realistic price. The dealers are easy to spot because of the volume of cars they buy. Look at the back trunk. Open the back trunk, then you can see if the backpanel was damaged. Look at the cloth of back trunk. A well maintained car shouldhave a clean cloth and spear tire in back trunk. If the cloth is very dirty oryou can take off the cloth, the car was hit on back for the probability of 80%. Continental seems to get less less complaints and they are less expensive than the OEM Bridgestone EL42-RFT. I asked the local Town Fair Tire store and they told me that they could get the Conti overnight and costs about $200. Tirerack.com carries it for about $150 + shipping/mounting/balance. Getting 20K miles out of the Bridgestone is not so bad as it has a relatively low rating on wear compared to others. There has been some talk about the Bridgestone having a new modified version, but it's unclear if that's actually true. Check your signal and brake lights. It does not take much for them to burn out and you could be driving around without knowing it. Battery Cleaner(Removes built-up acid)Baking soda and Water Sprinkle baking soda onto battery terminals. Spritz with water to dampen. Let set for about one hour. Sponge off with water. Air dry. Supercharger kits are available for the Camry (Solara) V6 via Toyota's TRD division. If you can find a junked Solara from that year, you can do the engine/tranny/ECM swap then bolt on the blower. You even get a warranty on it. But granted, it puts out a tepid 4 psi boost. Any engine you want to withstand the boost you're looking for will need serious upgrading. Engine Degreaser: ¼ cup washing soda and 1 gallon warm water pour on engine areas that need degreasing. Rinse thoroughly. Excess should not be stored -- discard all leftovers. A few other items: Since I didn't bring proof of tire rotation and my tires were on the high side on pressure (which was done by a honda dealer BTW as the TPMS kept saying the pressure was low) Michelin resisted paying anything until I told the dealer I was going to keep the old tires for the lawsuit that was filed in LA in March, then within literally 10 seconds the Michelin rep agreed to pay 70% as a 'goodwill' gesture. Also I have had two Michelins with material defects on my Pilot. Expect to lose a day if you go thru this tire claim process, it took us 6 hours today. |
