Ideally, car makers will want to switch to using "direct" TPMS in the future such that the pressure on all 4 tires are checked electronically and displayed on the dash board by pushing a button. Until then, this new technology really requires more careful attention from owners, not less. This is a follow-up of my original post, where I had reported the tire going completely flat in a few hours and then held the pressure for more than a day later. I brought it to Town Fair Tire for an inspection. They took the tire off the wheel, smooth the rim and remounted it. I was told that there was a bit of corrosion and roughness on the rim. This makes sense to me as the leak may vary depending on whether the rough spot is close to the ground when the car is parked. Every rim has been damaged and I am trying to work a deal to have them take care of switching to a wheel and tire of my chasing along with a spare donught in the lazy susan well of the floor. I am not taking the odyssey off the lot until they have made it right by me. If they supply me with a 17" wheel and tire I have chosen I will let the matter drop. If they don't I will take photographs of the wheel damage done by them and retain an attorney. I am not going to put up with this insane monoply that Michelin and Honda have conspired in. This system is wrong and I will pursue it as far as humanly possible. The replacement wheel was priced to me at $400.00 each. If they don't take care of my request on Monday I will try to contact the media myself. First of all I decide what I am after. By this I usually try to avoid a picking a particular make or model of used car. Instead I prefer to look for a style of vehicle. For instance my last purchase, I was looking for a small sedan, one in good to great condition, it had to have 4 cylinders (for fuel economies sake) and have a manual transmission. I also wanted a car that was less than 4 years old. Start the engine. Pay attention to the sound when the car start. Good enginesounds not heavy. Push the gas, listen the sounds. Good engine should be verysmooth and stable. Watch if the muffler smoking. Close all trunks. Get in thecar. Check if the A/C is cold. Is there some special noise when you turn on theA/C? If something is power, check all of them. Don't forget the radio. Try to contact the us marshals office to find which auction they send the drug cars to, or contact your local banks and credit unions to see if they have repossessions up for bids, if they do don't be afraid of insulting anyone by low biding even if they have a start price. if you can prepare for purchasing a car a few months before you need to buy that's the best way to get your best deal. The O-ring around the shaft and the top gasket will not stop the oil from getting into the Dist. Somehow oil leaks internally into the Dist. after a few years and a few hundred K on these motors. I have had to replace two on 2 different cars (both were a camry) It does take a bit of work to get a reman Dist. back in the hole. Just use plenty of vasoline and take your time. The marketing pitch of these new technologies lead us to think that we would have less to worry: TPMS tells us when there is a problem, and we can keep driving 50 miles when the warning comes on. The truth is just the opposite: the new technology actually requires us to pay more careful attention to the tires than we're used to. A nail puncture in RFT can be repaired in principle, but apparently most service stations would not want to earn that $20 to risk being blamed for bigger problems later. Negative camber with to much toe out wears the inside edge of the tire. Get the car aligned. TPMS tells you when to pull over and fix your flat or run it flat and replace it. If you reset your TPMS it wont be active for a while as it relearns strategy in which time the tire pressure could be going down. Plugs allow you to patch a nail hole along side the road. Rotate your tires every other oil change and you wont have the shoulder wear on the front tires and the cupping on the rear tires. If you buy the car by financing. Always pay attention to the APR. DifferentAPR means different price. Carry a pressure guage and a small tire pump in the trunk at all times. In my '06 330xi, a small well under the trunk floor fits my tire pump perfectly. When the tire pressure warning comes on, don't keep driving on the flat if you can avoid it. Stop the car at a safe spot, pump up the flat, re-initialize the TPMS, and then drive to find a service station. If you get there before the warning comes on again, chances are that the tire has not been ruined and the tire can be repired. Most nail punctures are slow leaks. If you have not driven on the flat, no damage has been done and you shouldn’t have to replace it. Engine Degreaser: ¼ cup washing soda and 1 gallon warm water pour on engine areas that need degreasing. Rinse thoroughly. Excess should not be stored -- discard all leftovers. |
